Shipping Fragile Ceramics from Vietnam: Our Professional Packing Process

How we safely ship Bat Trang ceramics, pottery, and fragile souvenirs from Vietnam — our packing process, materials, and tips for protecting breakable items.

Shipping Fragile Ceramics from Vietnam: Our Professional Packing Process

Bat Trang ceramics, blue-and-white pottery, decorative vases — Vietnamese ceramics are beautiful, affordable, and incredibly fragile. Every tourist who buys them faces the same worry: how do I get these home in one piece?

We ship ceramics from Vietnam every day. Here’s exactly how we do it.

Why standard packing fails

Tourists who try to carry ceramics in luggage often arrive home with broken pieces. Airline baggage handling involves throwing, stacking, and conveyor belts — none of which are gentle. Even wrapping in clothes or towels isn’t enough for most ceramic items.

Professional shipping packing is different because every piece gets individual attention and the right materials.

Our 5-step packing process

Step 1: Individual wrapping

Each ceramic piece is wrapped individually in bubble wrap — at least two layers for standard items, three or more for thin-walled or delicate pieces. Handles, spouts, and protruding parts get extra padding.

Step 2: Foam dividers

Multiple pieces are separated with foam dividers. No two pieces touch each other inside the box. This prevents the items from knocking together during transit.

Step 3: Base cushioning

The bottom of the shipping box gets a layer of foam or crumpled packing paper. This absorbs impact from below — the most common direction of shock during handling.

Step 4: Fill all gaps

Every gap inside the box is filled with packing peanuts or crumpled paper. The goal: nothing moves when you shake the box. If items can shift, they can break.

Step 5: Double boxing

For high-value or especially fragile ceramics, we use double boxing. The inner box (containing the wrapped items) goes inside a larger outer box with additional cushioning between the two. This creates a suspension effect that absorbs impact.

What ceramics can you ship?

We regularly ship:

  • Bat Trang ceramics — the famous pottery village near Hanoi
  • Blue-and-white pottery — traditional Vietnamese and Chinese-influenced designs
  • Decorative vases — all sizes, from small table vases to floor-standing pieces
  • Ceramic dinnerware — plates, bowls, cups, teapots
  • Tile art and mosaics — flat items that pack easily

Insurance recommendation

For valuable ceramics, we recommend shipping insurance. The cost is typically 2-3% of the declared value. Insurance covers replacement cost if items are damaged or lost during transit.

For everyday souvenir ceramics (under $50/piece), insurance is optional. For art-quality ceramics or antiques, we strongly recommend it.

Delivery success rate

Our damage rate for professionally packed ceramics is extremely low. The combination of individual wrapping, foam dividers, gap filling, and double boxing protects items through the entire journey from Vietnam to your doorstep.

When you ship with us, you’re not just paying for delivery — you’re paying for peace of mind that your ceramics arrive intact.

How to prepare your ceramics for pickup

When we arrive at your hotel for pickup, a few things help:

  1. Keep items in their store bags — we’ll repack them properly, but the store packaging tells us what we’re working with
  2. Point out the most fragile pieces — we’ll give them extra attention
  3. Have your receipts ready — for customs declaration and insurance valuation
